The polygamy represents a very common marriage pattern that you can find in many parts of the world, but especially the polygyny where a man is going to have more than one wife at the same time. Even if there are many countries from all over the world where polygamy is perfectly legal and it brings no problems at all, the polygamy in the US was never considered to be an institution which is legally recognized or something that the western culture is finding adequate or normative.

The polygamy can be easily defined since it means that a person is going to have at least more than one spouse at the exact same time and the convention of this is going to happen during the situation where all the other spouses are going to know about each other. And at the same time the bigamy is where two or sometimes even more spouses are not going to be aware one of each other.

The bigamy represents the act or just the condition where a person is going to marry another person while he is still lawfully married to another person. This practice not only that is illegal in United States but it is considered to be a crime which can be punished by a fine, imprisonment or sometimes in some states even by both. This is going to happen depending on the law of the state in which you are or by the circumstances in which the offense has happened.

The polygamy in the US has been present for a very long period of time. It all started back in the time when the Native American tribes were practicing it, however most of the time it was only polygyny, where the men had more than one wife. After that when the European settlers have come they have took very often native wives and since these native wives allowed them to do it, they have adopted the practice. Some of these tribes have also continued to use the polygamy practice in the 20th century also.

There are currently a few polygamists groups that still exist in the United States. To be more exact the members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS) are the one that are still practicing polygamy and there are also arranged marriages where often, but at the same time not always.
